IR Frequency Region: Fingerprint Region01:03

IR Frequency Region: Fingerprint Region

IR spectra are divided into two main regions: the diagnostic region and the fingerprint region. The diagnostic region of the spectrum lies above 1500 cm−1. The absorptions resulting from single-bond vibrations of the N–H, C–H, and O–H stretch at higher wavenumbers and appear on the left side of the spectrum. The stretching absorptions of the C≡C and C≡N occur between 2100–2300 cm−1. In contrast, those arising from stretching absorptions of the C=O, C=N, and C=C occur between 1600–1850 cm−1.

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Spectroscopy
  • Medical Physics
  • Oncology

Context:

  • Meningiomas are primary brain tumors originating from the meninges.
  • Accurate differentiation between benign and malignant meningiomas is crucial for treatment planning.
  • Current diagnostic methods may be invasive or time-consuming.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the potential of Fourier-transform mid-infrared (FT-mid-IR) spectroscopy combined with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) for distinguishing between benign and malignant meningioma tissues.
  • To analyze spectral differences in meningioma tissues based on histological type and grade of malignancy.
  • To evaluate the accuracy of FT-mid-IR spectroscopy in meningioma diagnosis.

Summary:

  • FT-mid-IR spectroscopy with ATR was used to analyze 24 meningioma tissue samples (12 benign, 12 malignant).
  • Significant spectral differences were observed between different meningioma subtypes and varying grades of malignancy.
  • Distinguishing features, particularly in the 1000-1500 cm⁻¹ range, allowed differentiation of malignant from benign tumors with >85% accuracy.

Impact:

  • FT-mid-IR spectroscopy offers a promising novel method for rapid, non-invasive brain tumor diagnosis.
  • This technique could complement or potentially replace existing invasive diagnostic procedures.
  • The findings support the development of spectroscopic tools for intraoperative tumor margin assessment.
