Summary

Bipolar scissors tonsillectomy and bipolar diathermy forceps tonsillectomy show comparable outcomes in operative time, blood loss, and postoperative hemorrhage. Both methods are safe and effective for tonsil removal.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the outcomes of bipolar scissors tonsillectomy versus bipolar diathermy forceps tonsillectomy.
  • Evaluate operative time, blood loss, and postoperative hemorrhage for both techniques.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 91 patients at Cairo University Hospital.
  • Right tonsils removed with bipolar scissors (Group A), left tonsils with bipolar forceps (Group B).
  • Comparison of operative time, intraoperative blood loss, and postoperative bleeding rates.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference in mean operative time between bipolar scissors (14.68 min) and bipolar forceps (14.66 min) tonsillectomy.

Conclusions:

  • Bipolar diathermy forceps tonsillectomy, while using less expensive equipment, offers comparable outcomes to bipolar scissors.
  • Both techniques are viable for tonsillectomy with similar safety and efficacy profiles.
