Background:

Irish hospitals face significant outpatient waiting lists, with many slots occupied by routine postoperative reviews.
Current follow-up methods contribute to prolonged waiting times and inefficient resource allocation.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of outpatient text (OPT) message surveillance for postoperative patient follow-up.
To assess the impact of OPT surveillance on outpatient waiting times and healthcare resource utilization.

Main Methods:

A prospective study utilizing mobile phone text messages (OPT) for patient follow-up post-discharge.
Patients received texts 2 weeks post-discharge; those reporting wellness were discharged, while non-responders were scheduled for clinic appointments.

Main Results:

74.5% of patients were successfully discharged via text message surveillance.
A 13.6% reduction in outpatient visits and avoidance of 6 emergency department visits were observed.
Patient surveys indicated a strong preference for OPT surveillance as a follow-up method.

Conclusions:

Text message surveillance is an effective strategy for decreasing outpatient waiting times.
Implementing OPT surveillance improves the quality of patient care and optimizes healthcare resource allocation.
