Assessment and predictability of ANB angle.

P K Chandra, K Godfrey

    Australian Orthodontic Journal
    |March 1, 1990

    Summary

This cephalometric study found a strong correlation between Angle ANB and jaw distance, and between Angle ANB and Wits appraisal. Angle ANB can be reliably predicted using Wits appraisal in orthodontic patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthodontics
    • Cephalometric Analysis
    • Dentofacial Orthopedics

    Background:

    • Cephalometric analysis is crucial for diagnosing and treating dentofacial discrepancies.
    • Angle ANB and Wits appraisal are commonly used to assess sagittal jaw relationships.
    • Understanding the correlation between these measurements aids in treatment planning.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the relationship between Angle ANB and the horizontal distance between jaws.
    • To assess the correlation between Angle ANB and Wits appraisal.
    • To predict Angle ANB using Wits appraisal and vice versa.
    • To compare the validity of Angle ANB with other cephalometric methods.

    Main Methods:

    • A cephalometric study was conducted on 33 orthodontic patients aged 13-15 years.
    • Statistical analysis included evaluating correlations (r values) and developing regression equations.
    • Agreement percentages were calculated to compare different measurement methods.

    Main Results:

    • A high correlation (r=0.99) was found between Angle ANB and horizontal jaw distance.
    • A significant correlation (r=0.95) was observed between Angle ANB and Wits appraisal, particularly with normal mandibular plane angles.
    • Angle ANB prediction from Wits appraisal was 90% accurate in mesofacial types.
    • Angle ANB showed 78.5% agreement with the standard, compared to Wits appraisal's 64.28%.

    Conclusions:

    • Angle ANB and Wits appraisal are reliable indicators of sagittal jaw relationships in adolescents.
    • Wits appraisal can be effectively used to predict Angle ANB, especially in mesofacial patients.
    • Angle ANB demonstrates higher validity compared to Wits appraisal in this cohort.
