This study found that many institutionalized elderly individuals are malnourished or at risk. Females are more likely to be undernourished than males, highlighting a need for targeted interventions.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Nutritional Science
- Public Health
Background:
- Malnutrition is a significant concern in institutionalized elderly populations.
- Assessing nutritional status is crucial for geriatric care and health outcomes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of malnutrition among institutionalized Spanish adults aged 65 and older.
- To examine the relationship between anthropometric and biochemical markers and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) scores.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional survey was conducted on a representative sample of institutionalized Spanish individuals aged 65+.
- Data collection included anthropometric measurements, MNA testing, and biochemical evaluations by Geriatrics Units specialists.
Main Results:
- A high prevalence of undernutrition (22.5%) and those at risk (49.6%) was observed in the study population.
- Older age groups (especially >95) and females showed higher rates of undernutrition.
- MNA scores correlated significantly with iron, total cholesterol, albumin, transferrin, age, and hemoglobin levels.
Conclusions:
- Institutionalized elderly individuals exhibit a substantial prevalence of undernutrition or are at risk.
- Females are disproportionately more undernourished compared to males in this population.
- Findings underscore the importance of nutritional screening and intervention programs for institutionalized older adults.
