Hearing

When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric audiology
  • Educational audiology

Background:

  • Appropriate functioning of hearing aids is crucial for children with hearing impairment to benefit from preschool programs.
  • Previous studies in the 1970s highlighted issues with hearing aid functionality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the functionality of hearing aids in preschool-aged children.
  • To assess the current state of hearing aid device performance in early intervention settings.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated 44 hearing aids worn by 24 children (ages 3-5 years) in four state-funded preschools.
  • Utilized listening checks and visual examinations to assess hearing aid functionality.
  • Categorized devices as 'pass' or 'fail' based on evaluation outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Over half (27 out of 44) of the tested hearing aids exhibited at least one problem.
  • Issues were identified through both listening and visual inspection methods.
  • Failure rates indicate persistent challenges in maintaining functional amplification devices.

Conclusions:

  • Hearing aid failure rates in preschool settings have not improved since the 1970s.
  • Basic listening and visual checks reveal significant issues with hearing aid functionality.
  • Results underscore the necessity for a national discussion on improving hearing aid maintenance and performance for young children.
