Itraconazole therapy for chronic coccidioidal meningitis

Background:

• Coccidioidal meningitis is a severe fungal infection of the central nervous system.
• Standard therapies for coccidioidal meningitis can be limited by toxicity and efficacy.

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate the effectiveness of oral itraconazole in patients with coccidioidal meningitis resistant to conventional treatments.
• To assess the safety and tolerability of itraconazole in this patient population.

• A prospective, nonrandomized, open-label, multicenter trial was conducted.
• Ten patients with culture or serologic confirmation of coccidioidal meningitis, refractory to standard therapy, were enrolled.
