Concept of Resonance and its Characteristics01:19

Concept of Resonance and its Characteristics

If a driven oscillator needs to resonate at a specific frequency, then very light damping is required. An example of light damping includes playing piano strings and many other musical instruments. Conversely, to achieve small-amplitude oscillations as in a car's suspension system, heavy damping is required. Heavy damping reduces the amplitude, but the tradeoff is that the system responds at more frequencies. Speed bumps and gravel roads prove that even a car's suspension system is not immune...
Forced Oscillations01:06

Forced Oscillations

When an oscillator is forced with a periodic driving force, the motion may seem chaotic. The motions of such oscillators are known as transients. After the transients die out, the oscillator reaches a steady state, where the motion is periodic, and the displacement is determined.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Optometry
  • Vision Science

Background:

  • Prescription of near vision additions often assumes limited sustainable amplitude of accommodation.
  • Understanding accommodative system robustness is crucial for effective presbyopic correction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the sustainability of the pre-presbyopic accommodative system during sustained near vision tasks.
  • To determine how much eye focus is required for adequate presbyopic correction.

Main Methods:

  • 21 pre-presbyopic volunteers underwent binocular subjective amplitude of accommodation testing (RAF rule) before and after a 30-minute reading exercise.
  • Near reading distance, pupil size, and accommodative accuracy to various diopter stimuli were objectively measured using an open-view autorefractor.

Main Results:

  • Amplitude of accommodation and accommodative accuracy remained statistically unchanged post-exercise.
  • Mean accommodation exerted was 80.6%, increasing with task duration and subject age.
  • No significant change in accommodative accuracy or amplitude was observed.

Conclusions:

  • The pre-presbyopic accommodative system demonstrates robustness against fatigue during prolonged, intensive near work.
  • A larger proportion of the amplitude of accommodation can be sustained continuously than previously believed.
