Conditioned Taste Aversion01:14

Conditioned Taste Aversion

Conditioned taste aversion, also known as sauce béarnaise syndrome, is a phenomenon in which an individual develops an aversion to a certain food taste following a negative experience, typically illness. This form of aversion is a type of classical conditioning in which the taste of the food (conditioned stimulus, CS) is associated with the experience of illness (unconditioned stimulus, UCS).
A notable characteristic of conditioned taste aversion is that it often requires only a single exposure...

    • Neuroscience
    • Behavioral Genetics

    Background:

    • Olfactory memory research in Drosophila has a long history since the 1960s.
    • Previous memory assays have undergone several modifications over time.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To provide a detailed protocol for the aversive (odor-shock) olfactory memory assay.
    • To describe essential control assays for sensory acuity and locomotor behavior in Drosophila.

    Main Methods:

    • Detailed description of the aversive (odor-shock) memory assay.
    • Inclusion of control assays for sensory acuity.
    • Inclusion of control assays for locomotor behavior.

    Main Results:

    • The described assays are functional in the Waddell laboratory.
    • The assays are adaptable for further improvements and adjustments.

    Conclusions:

    • This protocol offers a refined method for studying olfactory memory in Drosophila.
    • The inclusion of control assays ensures the validity of memory assessment.
