Summary

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can cause acute encephalitis. Early intravenous acyclovir treatment led to a rapid recovery in a comatose patient, though its effectiveness is unproven.

Background:

  • Acute encephalitis is a severe neurological condition.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with clinical features suggestive of acute encephalitis.
  • Diagnosis was supported by a positive Monospot test.
  • The patient was in a comatose state.

Findings:

  • Intravenous acyclovir was administered early in the course of the illness.
  • Steroids were not utilized in this case.
  • The patient experienced a rapid and complete recovery, emerging from the comatose state.

Implications:

  • The efficacy of acyclovir for EBV encephalitis requires further investigation.
  • Early antiviral treatment may be beneficial for severely ill patients with uncertain prognoses.
  • This case highlights a potential therapeutic approach for severe EBV-related neurological conditions.
