Acute perimyocarditis impairs left ventricular (LV) function, reducing strain and twist angle. Speckle tracking revealed reduced LV strain and twist angle in patients, with some improvement noted on follow-up.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Cardiac Imaging
- Echocardiography
Background:
- Left ventricular (LV) function variability in acute perimyocarditis is noted.
- Speckle tracking echocardiography is utilized to assess LV function.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate left ventricular (LV) function in patients with acute perimyocarditis using speckle tracking.
- To assess strain and twist angle in patients with acute perimyocarditis.
Main Methods:
- Echocardiographic examination of 38 patients with acute perimyocarditis and 20 normal subjects.
- Assessment of three-layers strain and twist angle using speckle tracking.
- Follow-up echocardiography in 21 patients.
Main Results:
- Patients with perimyocarditis exhibited reduced strain and twist angle compared to normal subjects.
- Lower longitudinal strain and twist angle were observed in perimyocarditis patients, even with apparently normal LV function.
- Follow-up revealed improvement in longitudinal strain in 21 patients.
Conclusions:
- Acute perimyocarditis is associated with decreased LV twist angle, longitudinal, and circumferential strain.
- Even with normal LV function, perimyocarditis patients show reduced longitudinal strain and twist angle.
- Short-term follow-up indicates improvement in clinical parameters and longitudinal strain, despite residual LV dysfunction.
