Physicians need better tools for analyzing electronic health records (EHRs). This study presents a visual analytics model for multiple EHRs, offering seven design recommendations for improved information visualization tools.
Area of Science:
- Health Informatics
- Information Visualization
- Human-Computer Interaction
Background:
- Electronic health record (EHR) systems store and share patient data.
- Physician interaction with EHRs remains largely unchanged.
- Current systems lack robust support for temporal analysis of extensive patient data.
Purpose of the Study:
- To address the limitations of current EHR interaction models.
- To evaluate the generalizability of information visualization techniques across diverse medical scenarios.
- To propose a visual analytics process model for analyzing multiple EHRs.
Main Methods:
- Collected usage data and user comments for the Lifelines2 information visualization system.
- Evaluated the system across eight distinct medical case studies.
- Developed a generalized visual analytics process model based on empirical data.
Main Results:
- Information visualization techniques often suffer from limited generalizability due to single case study applications.
- Lifelines2 demonstrated utility across multiple medical scenarios.
- User feedback provided insights into effective EHR data exploration.
Conclusions:
- A generalized visual analytics process model for multiple EHRs can be developed.
- Seven key design recommendations are proposed for enhancing information visualization tools for EHR exploration.
- Improved visualization tools are crucial for effective temporal analysis of large EHR datasets.
