Thromboelastography (TE) reveals distinct coagulation patterns in pregnant women. New reference ranges for TE parameters in third-trimester pregnancies are proposed to improve clinical accuracy.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Medicine
- Hematology
- Clinical Coagulation
Background:
- Standard thromboelastography (TE) reference ranges may not accurately reflect the unique hemostatic changes during pregnancy.
- Understanding these differences is crucial for appropriate clinical management of pregnant individuals.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare thromboelastography (TE) coagulation parameters between healthy pregnant women in their third trimester and non-pregnant women.
- To establish new, trimester-specific reference ranges for TE in pregnancy.
Main Methods:
- A prospective observational study compared TE parameters in 60 pregnant women (group GRAV) and 43 non-pregnant women (group NON-GRAV).
- Selective percentiles were utilized to define new reference limits for TE variables.
Main Results:
- Significant differences were observed in TE parameters including reaction time (r), kinetic time (k), alpha angle, maximum amplitude, coagulation index, and LY60 between the groups.
- New reference limits were established for pregnant women: r time (2-8 min), k time (1-3 min), alpha angle (60-77°), maximum amplitude (64-76 mm), LY60 (0-3%), and coagulation index (0-5).
Conclusions:
- Existing thromboelastography (TE) reference ranges are not suitable for pregnant women.
- New reference limits for TE are proposed for third-trimester pregnancies to enhance diagnostic precision.
