Age-related increases in adiponectin levels were observed in Africans but not Caucasians. Insulin resistance, not renal function, was most strongly associated with adiponectin in all groups.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Nephrology
- Gerontology
Background:
- Aging is linked to higher adiponectin levels.
- Adiponectin is an adipokine with roles in glucose and lipid metabolism.
- Its association with age-related changes in renal function requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between aging, adiponectin levels, and renal function.
- To compare these associations across African and Caucasian men and women.
- To identify factors associated with elevated adiponectin in aging populations.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional study of African (N=277) and Caucasian (N=326) participants.
- Measurement of serum adiponectin, estimated creatinine clearance, and obesity indices.
- Statistical analyses including regression models to assess associations.
Main Results:
- African men had higher adiponectin than Caucasian men, despite lower adiposity.
- Adiponectin increased significantly with age in Africans but not Caucasians.
- Renal function declined with age in all groups.
- Insulin resistance showed the strongest association with adiponectin levels across all groups.
Conclusions:
- The age-related rise in adiponectin in Africans is likely not driven by declining renal function.
- Insulin resistance is a key determinant of adiponectin levels, irrespective of age or ethnicity.
- Further research is needed to elucidate the complex interplay between adiponectin, aging, ethnicity, and metabolic health.
