Summary

Dental students showed a preference for print textbooks over e-textbooks, even after using the VitalSource Bookshelf program. While they appreciated its search function, reading lengthy content digitally remained a challenge.

Background:

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry has mandated VitalSource Bookshelf for dental students since 2005.
Previous surveys indicated student dissatisfaction with the e-textbook program's features.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess first-year dental students' attitudes toward electronic textbooks.
To evaluate student experiences with the VitalSource Bookshelf e-textbook program.

Main Methods:

Two surveys were administered to first-year dental students (Class of 2013).
Survey 1 (S1) assessed pre-exposure e-book experience and expectations.
Survey 2 (S2) evaluated opinions after nine months of using VitalSource.

Main Results:

Only 20% of surveyed students had prior e-textbook experience in college.
After nine months, 66% of students preferred print textbooks, a higher percentage than in a 2008 survey.
Students valued VitalSource's searchability but found it less suitable for extensive reading.

Conclusions:

Incoming dental students had limited prior e-textbook exposure.
A majority of students preferred print textbooks over digital alternatives for dental education.
The VitalSource Bookshelf offers benefits for topic searching but presents challenges for reading comprehension.
