Summary

The timing of menstrual irregularities in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) does not affect adult metabolic, hormonal, or ovarian profiles. Early or later onset of irregular periods in PCOS patients shows no significant differences in health outcomes.

Background:

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by diverse menstrual irregularities.
  • The impact of the onset timing (peripubertal vs. postpubertal) of these irregularities on adult PCOS profiles is unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare anthropometric, metabolic, hormonal, and ultrasound findings in PCOS women based on the onset of menstrual irregularities.
  • To investigate if peripubertal onset differs from postpubertal onset in adult PCOS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 89 women diagnosed with PCOS at age 25.
  • Group 1: Menstrual irregularities from menarche (n=49).
  • Group 2: Irregularities appearing at least 3 years post-menarche (n=40).
  • Matched for Body Mass Index (BMI) and age.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in anthropometric parameters between the groups.
  • Metabolic and hormonal profiles were comparable in both groups.
  • Ovarian ultrasound findings did not differ between PCOS women with peripubertal versus postpubertal onset of menstrual irregularities.

Conclusions:

  • The timing of menstrual irregularity onset in PCOS does not appear to influence adult hormonal/metabolic status.
  • Ovarian morphology in PCOS patients is not significantly impacted by the timing of initial menstrual irregularities.
  • These findings suggest the timing of PCOS symptom onset may not be a critical factor for long-term metabolic and hormonal health.
