Summary

P-glycoprotein (Pgp), linked to multidrug resistance, was found in 21% of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patients. Pgp expression did not correlate with patient factors or treatment response in this study.

Background:

  • Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a heterogeneous group of lymphoid malignancies.
  • Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a significant challenge in NHL treatment.
  • P-glycoprotein (Pgp) is a key transmembrane protein implicated in MDR.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression of P-glycoprotein (Pgp) in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) tissues.
  • To determine the correlation between Pgp expression and clinicopathological factors in NHL patients.
  • To assess the association between Pgp expression and treatment response in NHL.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical analysis of Pgp expression in NHL tissue samples.
  • Correlation analysis with patient age, disease stage, lactate dehydrogenase levels, extranodal involvement, and prior chemotherapy.
  • Comparison of Pgp expression in complete responders versus partial or non-responders.

Main Results:

  • Pgp was expressed in 6 out of 29 (21%) NHL patients.
  • Pgp expression was observed in 38% of low-grade and 19% of intermediate-grade NHL.
  • No significant association was found between Pgp expression and age, stage, LDH, extranodal disease, prior chemotherapy, or treatment response (p>0.10).

Conclusions:

  • P-glycoprotein (Pgp) expression is present in a subset of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) cases.
  • Pgp expression in NHL does not appear to be directly associated with common clinical parameters or treatment outcomes in this cohort.
  • Further research may be warranted to elucidate the role of Pgp in NHL pathogenesis and resistance mechanisms.
