Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Oncology
  • Interventional Radiology

Context:

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an aggressive liver cancer.
  • Surgical resection is not an option for many HCC patients.
  • Hepatic chemoembolisation offers a local treatment alternative.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the clinical use of doxorubicin-loaded DC Beads in hepatic chemoembolisation.
  • To assess the early toxicity of this treatment for liver cancer.
  • To describe patient characteristics and treatment indications.

Summary:

  • A retrospective study analyzed 22 patients with unresectable liver cancer treated with doxorubicin-loaded DC Beads.
  • Patients were assessed using Child-Pugh and Okuda staging systems.
  • The most common toxicity was post-procedure symptoms, managed with medication.

Impact:

  • Doxorubicin-loaded DC Beads chemoembolisation is a viable and well-tolerated treatment for liver cancer.
  • The procedure demonstrated mild and manageable early toxicity.
  • This therapy provides an effective option for patients ineligible for surgery.
