Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain, an unrelenting pursuit of thinness, and a distorted body image. It often leads to dangerously low body weight relative to an individual's age and height. This disorder is marked by significant physical and psychological consequences, making it one of the most life-threatening psychiatric illnesses.

Binge Eating Disorders

Binge eating disorder is a significant mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption within a short period, accompanied by a perceived loss of control over eating behavior. Unlike occasional overeating, binge eating disorder is marked by distressing emotions such as guilt, shame, and anxiety following binge episodes. The disorder affects individuals across different ages and backgrounds, with profound implications for physical and psychological...
Sex Linked Disorders01:43

Sex Linked Disorders

Like autosomes, sex chromosomes contain a variety of genes necessary for normal body function. When a mutation in one of these genes results in biological deficits, the disorder is considered sex-linked.
Bulimia Nervosa01:30

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by a cyclical pattern of binge-and-purge eating pattern. It generally involves an episode of binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative use, or fasting, to prevent weight gain. Despite often maintaining a normal weight, individuals with bulimia are intensely preoccupied with their body image and harbor an overwhelming fear of gaining weight. This can contribute to the...

Amebiasis01:28

Amebiasis

Entamoeba histolytica, a protozoan parasite, is responsible for intestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis. Though a significant proportion of infections remain asymptomatic, approximately 50 million individuals annually are estimated to present with clinical disease, resulting in up to 100,000 deaths globally. The disease burden is disproportionately high in regions with lower socioeconomic status, such as parts of India, Africa, Mexico, and Latin America.Etiology and TransmissionThe infective...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
  • Reproductive Health
  • Clinical Psychology

Context:

  • Eating disorders (ED), including Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), and Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS), are associated with significant psychological distress.
  • Sexual functioning is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet its relationship with ED remains underexplored.
  • Previous research has primarily focused on the psychological and physiological symptoms of ED, with less attention paid to their impact on sexual health.

Purpose:

  • To investigate and compare the sexual functioning of patients diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), and Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS).
  • To evaluate sexual activity patterns, including partnered sexual activity and masturbation, in an ED sample.
  • To assess the prevalence of sexual dysfunction using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) in individuals with ED compared to healthy controls.

Summary:

  • A study compared 98 patients with ED (AN, BN, EDNOS) to 88 healthy controls using validated questionnaires assessing depression, anxiety, general psychopathology, eating disorder symptoms, and sexual function (FSFI).
  • Results indicated that 68.4% of patients with ED reported sexual activity compared to 90.9% of controls. Patients exhibited higher FSFI scores, suggesting poorer sexual functioning across all domains.
  • No significant differences in FSFI scores were found among the different ED subtypes (AN, BN, EDNOS).

Impact:

  • Women with ED demonstrate a six-fold increased risk of sexual dysfunction and engage in less partnered sexual activity than healthy women.
  • Masturbation was reported more frequently as the sole form of sexual activity among patients with ED.
  • Body image discomfort during sexual intimacy may contribute to the observed sexual dysfunction in women with eating disorders.
