Short-term, medium-dose pulse prednisolone therapy shows significant efficacy for multifocal alopecia areata, with good tolerability. However, it proved less effective for alopecia areata totalis and universalis.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Immunology
Background:
- Alopecia areata etiology remains unclear.
- Systemic prednisolone is effective but has side effects.
- Need for safer, effective alopecia areata treatments.
Purpose of the Study:
- Evaluate efficacy and safety of short-term, medium-dose pulse prednisolone.
- Assess treatment response in various alopecia areata forms.
Main Methods:
- Prospective, monocenter study.
- 23 patients with active alopecia areata.
- Intravenous 100 mg prednisolone pulse therapy over 3 days, repeated monthly for three courses.
Main Results:
- 84% of multifocal alopecia areata patients showed marked improvement.
- One ophiasis type patient responded after third course, with relapse.
- Alopecia areata totalis and universalis patients did not respond.
- No major side effects observed.
Conclusions:
- Three monthly courses of medium-dose prednisolone pulse therapy are effective and well-tolerated for active, multifocal alopecia areata.
- Treatment is less effective for alopecia areata totalis/universalis.
- Pulse prednisolone offers a viable option for specific alopecia areata subtypes.
