Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Orbital tumors can present with non-specific symptoms like proptosis and diplopia.
  • Inflammatory pseudotumor is a common differential diagnosis for orbital masses, often treated with steroids.

Observation:

  • A 45-year-old male presented with 7 months of proptosis and diplopia.
  • Initial treatment with oral steroids for suspected inflammatory pseudotumor was ineffective.

Findings:

  • Intraoperative biopsy revealed primary liposarcoma.
  • Surgical debulking, followed by exenteration and radiotherapy, confirmed the diagnosis.
  • No recurrence was observed after 2 years of follow-up.

Implications:

  • Accurate and early diagnosis is crucial for effective management of orbital liposarcoma.
  • Delayed diagnosis due to misdiagnosis can negatively impact treatment outcomes.
  • Multimodal treatment including surgery and radiotherapy offers a favorable prognosis for orbital liposarcoma.
