Abstract:
The title compound, [Fe(4)(C(5)H(5)OS)(2)S(CO)(12)], was prepared by the direct reaction of Fe(3)(CO)(12) and 2-furyl-methane-thiol in tetra-hydro-furan. Desulfurization took place readily to form an Fe(4)S(3) cluster. The mol-ecule consists of two similar [(μ-2-C(4)H(3)O-CH(2)S)Fe(2)(CO)(6)] moieties joined to a spiro-type four-coordinate μ(4)-S atom such that this bridging sulfur is tetra-hedrally coordinated to the four Fe atoms. In each diiron subcluster core, the 2-furyl-methane-thiol-ate ligand bridges the two Fe atoms.

Colors and Magnetism
When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human eye.
Metal-Ligand Bonds
In these complexes, transition metals form coordinate covalent bonds, a kind of Lewis acid-base interaction in which both of the electrons in the bond are contributed by a donor (Lewis base) to an electron acceptor (Lewis acid). The Lewis acid in...
