Elastin is Responsible for Tissue Elasticity01:12

Elastin is Responsible for Tissue Elasticity

Elastic fiber contains the protein elastin along with lesser amounts of other proteins and glycoproteins. The main property of elastin is that it will return to its original shape after being stretched or compressed. Elastic fibers are prominent in elastic tissues found in skin and the elastic ligaments of the vertebral column.
Ligaments and tendons are made of dense regular connective tissue, but in ligaments not all fibers are parallel. Dense regular elastic tissue contains elastin fibers and...

Subscapular elastofibromas are rare tumors. Two cases highlight surgical excision as an effective treatment with no recurrence, confirmed by histological examination of increased elastic fibers.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Elastofibroma is a rare, benign tumor typically found in the subscapular region.
  • This condition often presents as a slow-growing mass, and diagnosis can be challenging due to its rarity.

Observation:

  • Two cases of subscapular elastofibroma are presented: a 75-year-old woman with a left dorsal tumor and a 90-year-old man with a right dorsal tumor.
  • Imaging via computed tomography (CT) scan identified tumors measuring 6 cm and 5 cm, respectively, in the inferior scapular angles.

Findings:

  • Both patients underwent successful surgical excision of their respective elastofibromas.
  • Histological examination, including elastica van Gieson staining, confirmed the presence of increased elastic fibers, consistent with the diagnosis of elastofibroma.

Implications:

  • Surgical excision appears to be a curative treatment for subscapular elastofibromas.
  • The presented cases suggest that elastofibromas, even when large, can be managed effectively with a low risk of recurrence.
