Summary

Sandostatin (octreotide) effectively treated apudomas, particularly vipomas and carcinoids, improving symptoms like diarrhea and flushing. However, it was ineffective for insulinoma and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, with response decreasing in larger tumors.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Medical Oncology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Apudomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors with diverse clinical presentations.
  • Sandostatin (octreotide) is a somatostatin analog used to manage symptoms of certain neuroendocrine tumors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and side effects of Sandostatin (octreotide) in patients with apudomas.
  • To determine which subtypes of apudomas respond best to Sandostatin treatment.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study of 24 patients with 26 apudomas treated with Sandostatin (octreotide).
  • Clinical and biochemical responses were assessed for different apudoma subtypes.

Main Results:

  • Excellent clinical and biochemical response observed in 2 patients with vipoma.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Sandostatin improved diarrhea (70%), flushing (58%), and wheezing (100%) in 15 patients with carcinoids.
  • No response to Sandostatin was noted in patients with insulinoma and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Response declined with increased tumor size and markers. Side effects were minimal.
  • Conclusions:

    • Sandostatin (octreotide) is a beneficial treatment for vipomas and carcinoids, offering significant symptom relief.
    • Treatment with Sandostatin is not effective for insulinoma or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
    • Tumor burden and markers may predict Sandostatin response in apudoma patients.
