Summary

This study found that p53 and BCL-2 proteins, and MIB 1 proliferation, do not predict radiotherapy response in breast cancer patients. However, MIB 1 levels decreased after treatment, indicating reduced proliferation.

Background:

  • In vitro research suggests p53 and BCL-2 proteins influence apoptosis, and rapid cell proliferation impacts radiotherapy sensitivity.
  • The clinical significance of these biological factors in predicting patient response to radiotherapy requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical relevance of p53 protein, BCL-2 protein, and MIB 1 antigen in predicting radiotherapy response in locally advanced breast cancer patients.

Main Methods:

  • Immunocytochemical staining was performed on primary tumors from 62 locally advanced breast cancer patients.
  • Assessed p53 protein, BCL-2 protein, and MIB 1 antigen expression.
  • Semi-quantitative assessment of MIB 1 staining before and after radiotherapy.

Main Results:

  • No significant correlation was found between p53 (p=1.0), BCL-2 (p=0.45), or MIB 1 (p=0.92) expression and radiotherapy response.
  • A significant reduction in MIB 1 positive cells was observed post-radiotherapy (p=0.04).

Conclusions:

  • p53, BCL-2, and MIB 1 expression are not clinically valuable predictors of radiotherapy response in locally advanced breast cancer.
  • The observed decrease in MIB 1 staining post-radiotherapy suggests reduced tumor cell proliferation correlates with treatment response.
