Summary

The mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude did not consistently decrease with increasing deviant probability in auditory pattern violations. This suggests that once a stable memory representation is formed, further regularity examples may not strengthen it.

Background:

  • The mismatch negativity (MMN) is an event-related potential reflecting automatic change detection in auditory processing.
  • A classic finding is the inverse relationship between MMN amplitude and the probability of deviant stimuli.
  • This relationship's applicability to violations of concrete rule patterns requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if the inverse relationship between MMN amplitude and deviant probability holds for violations of concrete auditory rule patterns.
  • To explore the influence of deviant probability on MMN amplitude in patterned auditory sequences.

Main Methods:

  • Three experiments were conducted using auditory sequences with varying deviant probabilities.
  • Experiment 1 presented oddball and patterned sequences at high (0.16) and rare (0.02) deviant probabilities.
  • Experiments 2 and 3 employed different patterns and probability levels (0.08, 0.04) and included active detection tasks.

Main Results:
