[Current theories on the etiology of multiple sclerosis]

The review is concerned with the problems of multiple sclerosis etiology, with the new data enriching the existing concepts of the given question. Special attention is paid to an analysis of the role of retroviruses, new genetic markers, and environmental factors. Approaches to further studies into the disease are outlined.
