A study found that while most Adult (ANP) and Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP) practice in traditional settings, many Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) do not. This highlights a need for additional education and mentoring for NPs in non-traditional roles.

Background:

  • Understanding the alignment between NP certification and practice location is limited.
  • This study investigates the congruence of NP practice sites with their certification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the practice settings of Adult (ANP), Family (FNP), and Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) in relation to their certification.
  • To identify the extent of non-traditional practice settings among certified NPs.
  • To explore additional education received by NPs after employment.

Main Methods:

  • Survey administered to 2,000 randomly selected ANPs, ACNPs, and FNPs certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
  • Data collected on certification, demographics, practice setting, responsibilities, and additional training.
  • Expert panel defined traditional practice settings aligned with NP scopes of practice.

Main Results:

  • A 69.8% survey response rate (n=1216) was achieved.
  • 42% of ACNPs, 7% of ANPs, and 5% of FNPs reported practicing in non-traditional settings.
  • ACNPs predominantly practiced in ambulatory care, while FNPs and ANPs were found in emergency departments and intensive care units, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Over 90% of ANPs and FNPs practice in settings consistent with their certification.
  • A significant proportion of NPs, particularly ACNPs, practice in non-traditional settings.
  • Additional education and mentoring may be beneficial for NPs in non-traditional roles.
