    Summary

    Elevated levels of pp60(c-src) tyrosine kinase were observed in many human breast cancers. While not universally linked to poor prognosis, increased pp60(c-src) may drive malignant cell proliferation.

    • Elevated protein-tyrosine kinase activity of pp60(c-src) is linked to shorter disease-free periods in breast cancer patients.
    • In colon cancer, pp60(c-src) protein levels correlate with tumor malignancy grade.

    • To investigate the expression of pp60(c-src) in human breast cancers.
    • To compare pp60(c-src) levels with prognostic histopathological factors.

    Main Methods:

    • Immunohistochemical demonstration of pp60(c-src) in 48 human breast cancer samples.
    • Comparison of pp60(c-src) levels with tumor size, axillary metastases, and malignancy grade.

    Main Results:

    • A weakly positive pp60(c-src) reaction was found in normal cells and 40% of breast cancers.
