Tumor Immunotherapy01:27

Tumor Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Physics
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Radiotherapy Technology

Background:

  • Standard radiation therapy relies on static imaging, failing to account for significant anatomical changes during treatment.
  • Anatomical variations during a radiation therapy course can be substantial, potentially compromising treatment efficacy.
  • Adaptive radiation therapy (ART) aims to bridge this gap by dynamically adjusting treatment based on patient anatomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and present various adaptive radiation therapy (ART) methods.
  • To highlight the technical components essential for ART implementation: image guidance, dose verification, and plan adaptation.
  • To provide an overview of current ART approaches developed and utilized by researchers.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on adaptive radiation therapy techniques.
  • Categorization of ART methods based on core technical components.
  • Analysis of different investigators' approaches to image guidance, dose verification, and plan adaptation.

Main Results:

  • Adaptive radiation therapy (ART) is a rapidly evolving field with diverse methodologies.
  • Successful ART implementation relies on the integration of advanced image guidance, precise dose verification, and flexible plan adaptation strategies.
  • Various ART methods are currently under development and in use, reflecting ongoing innovation in radiation oncology.

Conclusions:

  • Adaptive radiation therapy (ART) is crucial for optimizing radiation dose delivery by accounting for anatomical changes.
  • The integration of image guidance, dose verification, and plan adaptation forms the foundation of effective ART.
  • Continued research and development in ART methods promise to enhance treatment precision and patient outcomes in radiation oncology.
