Background:

Addressing significant medical workforce shortages in Australia, especially in rural and remote areas.
Exploring innovative healthcare roles to augment existing medical teams and improve service delivery.

Purpose of the Study:

To pilot and evaluate the suitability of the Physician Assistant (PA) role within the Australian healthcare system.
To assess the quality, safety, and impact of PAs on healthcare team dynamics and patient care.

Main Methods:

A pilot project employing five US-trained Physician Assistants (PAs) in urban, rural, and remote Queensland settings.
A concurrent mixed-method evaluation conducted by an independent research firm (Urbis).
Data collection involved assessing clinical care quality, safety, and perceptions of healthcare professionals.

Main Results:

Physician Assistants delivered quality, safe clinical care under medical supervision.
Healthcare teams reported positive contributions, including increased capacity, reduced doctor on-call burden, and improved patient flow.
PAs enhanced team collaboration and provided continuity during medical staff transitions.

Conclusions:

The delegated Physician Assistant role can safely and effectively augment established healthcare teams in Australia.
The PA role shows potential to increase healthcare system capacity and aid professional recruitment and retention.
Further research is recommended to explore PA training and deployment in diverse Australian clinical settings.
