Summary

Using a sterilized waterproof case for intra-operative photography with a digital camera is safe and effective. This technique improves photo-documentation quality without increasing surgical site infection rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the safety and efficacy of using a sterilized waterproof case for intra-operative digital photography.

  • A Fujifilm FinePix F30 digital camera in a Fuji WP-FXF30 waterproof case was used.
  • Microbiological swabs of the case and intra-operative wound swabs were collected from 46 patients.
  • Patients were monitored for additional wound infections.

  • No bacterial contamination was found on the case before use.
  • 11 patients had positive intra-operative wound cultures.
  • Eight of these patients showed correlated bacterial growth from the case surface post-use, with no additional infections noted.

  • The technique did not increase the surgical site infection rate.
  • High-quality intra-operative photographs can be safely obtained using this method.
