Summary

Total hip arthroplasty using a proximal modular femoral stem shows good mid-term clinical and radiological outcomes for secondary coxarthrosis in dysplastic hips. This surgical approach offers stable fixation and significant improvement in patient function.

  • To assess the clinical and radiological efficacy of THA with a proximal modular femoral stem.
  • To evaluate outcomes in patients with secondary coxarthrosis secondary to hip dysplasia.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 42 patients (45 hips) with secondary coxarthrosis underwent primary THA using the S-ROM proximal modular femoral stem.
  • Follow-up averaged 80 months, with assessments including the Harris hip score and radiographic evaluation.

Main Results:

  • The average Harris hip score significantly improved from 52.2 to 88.5.

  • Excellent or good clinical results were observed in 91.9% of hips.
  • All femoral stems demonstrated stable fixation, with 37 cases showing bony ingrowth and 8 showing stable fibrous ingrowth. No osteolysis or progressive radiolucent lines were noted.

    • Conclusions:

    • THA utilizing a proximal modular femoral stem provides favorable mid-term clinical and radiological results for secondary coxarthrosis in dysplastic hips.
    • The S-ROM stem demonstrates reliable fixation and a low complication rate in this patient population.
