The Korean version of the Startle, Physiological arousal, Anger, and Numbness (SPAN-K) scale demonstrates strong reliability and validity for screening post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This validated tool aids in the rapid identification of PTSD in clinical settings.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Psychometrics
Background:
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) requires effective screening tools.
- The Startle, Physiological arousal, Anger, and Numbness (SPAN) scale is a brief PTSD screening measure.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a Korean version of the SPAN scale (SPAN-K).
- To assess the psychometric properties of the SPAN-K for PTSD screening.
Main Methods:
- Recruited 93 PTSD patients, 73 psychiatric controls, and 88 healthy controls.
- Administered SPAN-K alongside established measures like CAPS and DTS.
- Evaluated reliability, concurrent validity, and diagnostic accuracy using ROC analysis.
Main Results:
- SPAN-K showed excellent test-retest reliability (0.80) and internal consistency (Cronbach's α=0.80).
- High correlations were found between SPAN-K and CAPS (0.87) and DTS (0.86) scores.
- Receiver operating characteristic analysis indicated good diagnostic accuracy (AUC=0.87) with optimal cutoff at 7 (sensitivity 0.83, specificity 0.81).
Conclusions:
- The SPAN-K exhibits robust psychometric properties.
- The SPAN-K is a reliable and valid instrument for rapid PTSD screening in Korean populations.
