Summary

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus can lead to optic neuritis, a rare complication. Recognizing subtle skin symptoms is crucial for early treatment of this serious condition.

  • Herpes zoster (HZ) arises from varicella-zoster virus reactivation.

  • A 74-year-old woman developed HZ optic neuritis 45 days post-trigeminal HZ.

  • The optic neuritis occurred as a postherpetic complication.

  • This case highlights delayed HZ optic neuritis following an atypical cutaneous presentation.
  • Non-specific prodromal symptoms of cutaneous HZ can precede neurological complications.
