Background:

  • Migraine is a common neurological disorder.
  • Palinopsia, characterized by visual perseveration, is a rare visual disturbance.
  • The prevalence of palinopsia in migraine patients is not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency of palinopsia in patients experiencing migraine.
  • To compare the occurrence of palinopsia between migraine with aura and migraine without aura subtypes.
  • To explore the relationship between palinopsia and migraine attack frequency.

Main Methods:

  • A structured interview/questionnaire was administered to 63 patients with migraine with aura (MwA), 137 patients with migraine without aura (MwoA), and 226 healthy controls.
  • Data were collected on the presence of palinopsia and migraine characteristics.
  • Statistical analyses were performed to determine frequencies and associations.

Main Results:

  • Palinopsia was reported by 9.5% of migraine patients (19/200).
  • The frequency was higher in MwA (14.2%) compared to MwoA (6.6%) (p = 0.002).
  • Patients with palinopsia experienced significantly lower migraine attack frequency (p < 0.0001).

Conclusions:

  • Palinopsia appears to be underdiagnosed in the migraine population.
  • Migraineurs may have an increased susceptibility to developing recurrent visual perseveration.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the link between migraine and palinopsia.
