Primary cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare cancer, can present unusually. This case highlights a patient with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis before cardiac angiosarcoma diagnosis, a novel paraneoplastic syndrome.

Glomerular Outgrowth as an Ex Vivo Assay to Analyze Pathways Involved in Parietal Epithelial Cell Activation

Background:

  • Primary cardiac angiosarcoma is a rare malignancy with frequent metastatic presentation.
  • Early diagnosis is challenging due to often asymptomatic initial clinical course.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with hemorrhagic pericardial effusion, initially negative for malignant cells.
  • The patient subsequently developed membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis requiring hemodialysis.

Findings:

  • Metastatic cardiac angiosarcoma was diagnosed five months after initial presentation.
  • This is the first reported case of paraneoplastic membranoproliferative glomerulopathy associated with cardiac angiosarcoma.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known clinical spectrum of cardiac angiosarcoma.
  • Highlights the importance of considering rare paraneoplastic syndromes in undiagnosed conditions.
