Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of SIL-C compared to traditional laparoscopic colectomy (TLC).
  • To assess oncologic principles, operative outcomes, and postoperative recovery between SIL-C and TLC.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patient records undergoing SIL-C or TLC for malignant or potentially malignant colorectal disease.
  • SIL-C utilized a single-port access device with a standard lateral-to-medial laparoscopic technique.
  • Forty-six TLC patients from the preceding year served as controls for 27 SIL-C procedures.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in median operative time, blood loss, or lymph node yield between SIL-C and TLC groups.
  • SIL-C group showed a trend towards shorter median length of stay (3 days vs. 5 days, p=0.079).

Conclusions:

  • The technique achieves comparable oncologic outcomes to TLC, with potential for reduced hospital stay.
  • SIL-C may represent an advancement in minimally invasive colorectal surgery.
