Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy of a child with posttraumatic stress disorder

This case study involves the use of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to treat a preadolescent male patient referred to the Delaware public mental health system due to a history of family violence and symptoms associated with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Pre- to post-treatment data on self- and parent-report measures demonstrate symptom reduction and exemplify the effectiveness of the model. Data on parent participation in the session and facilitation of trauma discussion at home illustrate the parent's contribution to the therapeutic process. Excerpts of clinical dialogue between child, parent, and therapist highlight the capacity of the model to accommodate individual needs and circumstances. Clinical recommendations supplement the treatment manual and provide clinicians with practical information for use in their own practices.
