This study developed a cost-effective small-animal SPECT system using a portable gamma camera. The variable radius system achieved satisfactory image quality for small animal imaging.
Area of Science:
- Medical Imaging
- Nuclear Medicine
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Small-animal SPECT imaging is crucial for preclinical research.
- Developing cost-effective and high-resolution systems remains a challenge.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a small-animal SPECT system using a low-cost commercial portable gamma camera.
- To optimize sensitivity and resolution through a variable radius system.
Main Methods:
- A portable gamma camera with a pinhole collimator was adapted to a variable radius system.
- Resolution and calibration parameters were assessed at different radii.
- Acquisitions were performed on small phantoms and mice.
Main Results:
- Resolution values of 1.0mm and 1.4mm were achieved at different radii.
- The variable radius system demonstrated its utility for optimizing SPECT performance.
- Satisfactory image quality was obtained for both phantoms and animal subjects.
Conclusions:
- The developed system is useful for small animal SPECT imaging.
- The variable radius approach enhances system flexibility and performance.
- This cost-effective system offers a viable option for preclinical imaging research.
