    Summary

    Sodium bicarbonate-based toothpastes, both paste and powder, significantly reduced dental caries and Streptococcus sobrinus bacteria in rats. These findings highlight the anticaries efficacy of these common toothpaste ingredients.

    Background:

    • Dental caries remains a significant global health issue.
    • Streptococcus sobrinus is a primary etiological agent in dental caries.
    • Sodium bicarbonate is a common ingredient in dentifrices with potential anticaries properties.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the anticaries efficacy of sodium bicarbonate-based dentifrices.
    • To assess the impact of these dentifrices on Streptococcus sobrinus recovery.
    • To compare the effects of powder and paste formulations.

    Main Methods:

    • Specific pathogen-free rats were fed a high-sucrose diet and infected with Streptococcus sobrinus.
    • Rats received topical treatments of demineralized water, dentifrice paste, or dentifrice powder daily.
    • Dental caries scores and bacterial recoveries (S. sobrinus and total flora) were assessed.

    Main Results:

    • Both dentifrice paste and powder significantly reduced S. sobrinus recoveries by 75% compared to water.
    • Total caries scores were reduced by 45% (powder) and 43% (paste) versus water.
    • Significant caries inhibition was observed on smooth surfaces (65-68%) and in fissures.

    Conclusions:

    • Sodium bicarbonate-based dentifrices containing 0.22% NaF are equally effective in inhibiting dental caries.
    • Both powder and paste formulations demonstrate potent anticaries effects in a rat model.
    • These findings support the use of sodium bicarbonate dentifrices for caries prevention.
