Unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) patients show significant functional recovery and leg extensor power (LEP) gains by one year. Strength and function stabilize by year one, with minimal further improvement by year two.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements in OKS (mean gain 15.9) and TAS (mean gain 0.84) were observed at 1 year post-UKR.
  • Leg extensor power (LEP) increased significantly in both operated (mean 0.50 W/kg) and non-operated (mean 0.10 W/kg) legs by 1 year.
  • Improvements in LEP and function stabilized between 1 and 2 years, with minimal further gains. Post-surgery LEP remained lower than age-matched healthy norms at 2 years.

Conclusions:

  • Functional recovery and leg extensor power (LEP) following unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) largely stabilize by one year post-surgery.
  • While UKR improves function and strength, leg extensor power may not fully recover to healthy normative values within two years.
