Background:

  • Phosphorus (P) is an essential mineral for broiler chick growth and bone development.
  • Hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate (HSCAS) is used in animal feed, but its effect on P utilization requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of HSCAS on the utilization of supplemental phosphorus in young broiler chicks.
  • To determine if HSCAS affects phosphorus absorption and bone mineralization.

Main Methods:

  • Two experiments were conducted using P-deficient diets supplemented with varying levels of P from KH2PO4 or dicalcium phosphate.
  • Chicks were fed diets with 0, 0.5%, or 1.0% HSCAS from 8 to 22 days posthatching.
  • Tibia ash weight, percentage of tibia ash, and bone-breaking force were measured to assess P utilization.

  • Tibia parameters showed a linear response to supplemental P intake (P < .01).
  • HSCAS supplementation (0.5% or 1.0%) did not affect P utilization, regardless of the P source (P > .1).
  • Phosphorus utilization from dicalcium phosphate was estimated at 87% of that from KH2PO4.

Conclusions:

  • Dietary HSCAS does not negatively impact phosphorus utilization in young broiler chicks.
  • HSCAS can be safely included in broiler diets without compromising phosphorus bioavailability.
  • These findings support the use of HSCAS in poultry nutrition without adverse effects on mineral metabolism.
