Background:

  • A significant number of patients leave emergency departments without being seen (did not wait - DNW).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of senior emergency medicine specialists reviewing triage notes of DNW patients.
  • To assess the utility of recalling at-risk DNW patients for further evaluation.
  • To determine the impact of this intervention on patient outcomes and hospital admissions.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study was conducted over one year, analyzing all DNW patients.
  • Triage notes of DNW patients were reviewed daily by senior emergency medicine specialists.
  • At-risk patients were contacted and advised to return by a liaison team.

Main Results:

  • Out of 45,959 patients, 2872 (6.3%) did not wait.
