Abstract:
Since the development of vaccines to prevent Haemophilus influenzae type b and Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in the United States. Education of healthcare professionals to improve identification and provide immediate treatment of patients with symptoms consistent with meningococcal disease will result in improved outcomes.
