Summary

Stereotactic frame fixation is stable during Gamma Knife surgery (GKS). Target location accuracy is maintained, ensuring reliable treatment delivery and patient safety.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Medical Imaging
  • Radiosurgery

Background:

  • Accurate targeting is crucial for effective Gamma Knife surgery (GKS).
  • Frame stability ensures precise radiation delivery to the intended lesion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate stereotactic frame stability during GKS.
  • To verify the coincidence of treated target and anatomical locations post-GKS.

Main Methods:

  • Stereotactic MRI scans were performed before and after GKS in 18 patients.
  • Coordinates of anatomical landmarks were defined multiple times to assess variability.
  • MR distortion was analyzed as a potential source of coordinate differences.

Main Results:

  • Coordinate uncertainty was comparable to pre- and post-GKS differences in most cases.

  • MR distortion, not frame movement, caused discrepancies in one patient.
  • Removing a fixation screw did not impact coordinate differences.
  • Conclusions:

    • The stereotactic frame demonstrates stable fixation throughout GKS procedures.
    • Frame stability ensures accurate targeting and treatment efficacy in radiosurgery.
