Background:

The classification of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) subgenotypes is crucial for epidemiological studies and vaccine development.
A previous study proposed a new classification for HBV subgenotype A, introducing 'quasi-subgenotype A3'.
Recent introduction of 'tentative subgenotype A7' strains necessitates re-evaluation of HBV subgenotyping principles.

Comparison of newly identified HBV strains with existing subgenotype A classifications.

Application of established principles for viral subgenotyping.

Main Results:

Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that 'tentative subgenotype A7' strains from Cameroon should be classified under 'quasi-subgenotype A3'.
The study identified potential misclassification of HBV strains due to deviations from established subgenotyping principles.

Conclusions:
