Insufficient Sleep and Sleep Deprivation01:13

Insufficient Sleep and Sleep Deprivation

Insufficient sleep refers to not getting the recommended amount of sleep for optimal functioning, even if it's just slightly less than needed. Sleep insufficiency may occur due to lifestyle choices, such as staying up late for social events or work, resulting in routinely getting less sleep than required. For example, consistently sleeping 6 hours when the body needs 7-9 hours can lead to cumulative effects on health and well-being.
Sleep deprivation is a more severe form of sleep loss...
Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.
Understanding the concepts of physical dependence,...

CNS Depressants: Alcohol and Nicotine

Ethanol, a clear colorless alcohol, has been consumed by humans for millennia, but its effects on the body are far from benign. At lower doses, it induces decreased inhibitions and loquaciousness, leading to its social appeal. However, it can cause severe consequences at higher doses, such as coma and respiratory depression, due to its zero-order elimination kinetics. Chronic ethanol abuse wreaks havoc on multiple organ systems, particularly the CNS and the liver. Abrupt cessation of ethanol...
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings.
Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV01:26

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...
Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping02:05

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about the way you...

Summary

Longer working hours in early adulthood are linked to increased alcohol use and alcohol abuse/dependence. These associations persist even after accounting for various confounding factors.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Occupational Health

Background:

  • Early adulthood is a critical period for establishing health behaviors.
  • Understanding factors contributing to alcohol-related problems is crucial for public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between weekly working hours and alcohol-related problems in early adulthood.
  • To determine if this association remains significant after controlling for potential confounders.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal birth cohort study followed 1019 participants from 1977 to age 30 in Christchurch, New Zealand.
  • Data on weekly working hours, frequent alcohol use, and alcohol abuse/dependence were collected at ages 25 and 30.
  • Statistical analyses adjusted for parental background, personality, IQ, education, life events, mental health, and family circumstances.

Main Results:

  • Significantly longer work hours correlated with more frequent alcohol use (P < 0.0001) and higher rates of alcohol abuse/dependence (P = 0.0001).
  • Individuals working 50+ hours/week showed 1.8-3.3 times higher rates of alcohol-related problems compared to non-workers, even after extensive adjustments.
  • Associations were consistent for both males and females.

Conclusions:

  • Extended working hours in early adulthood are associated with a greater prevalence of alcohol-related issues.
  • This includes increased frequency of alcohol consumption and higher rates of alcohol abuse and dependence.
  • The observed associations are robust and persist independently of numerous confounding variables.
