Background:

  • Localized scleroderma (LS) is a connective tissue disease characterized by morphea.
  • Musculoskeletal manifestations can occur in LS but are not always clinically apparent.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe musculoskeletal manifestations in patients with localized scleroderma (LS) using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.
  • To correlate MR imaging findings with LS clinical subtypes and suspected musculoskeletal features.

Main Methods:

  • MR imaging was performed on 43 patients with LS.
  • Findings were classified by LS subtype and evaluated for morphologic and signal abnormalities in various musculoskeletal structures.
  • Clinical suspicion of musculoskeletal features was recorded.

Main Results:

  • Musculoskeletal involvement was detected in 74% of patients via MR imaging.
  • Fascial thickening (60%) and subcutaneous septal thickening (65%) were common findings.
  • Higher prevalence of musculoskeletal involvement was observed in pansclerotic morphea.

Conclusions:

  • MR imaging is effective in revealing musculoskeletal involvement in patients with LS.
  • MR imaging can identify abnormalities not clinically suspected.
  • The findings highlight the importance of MR imaging in the comprehensive assessment of LS.
