- A 6-month-old infant presented with a purulent discharge from a buttock dimple and a palpable subcutaneous abscess.
- Infection indicators included low-grade fever, leukocytosis, and elevated C-reactive protein.
- Cultures identified Klebsiella and Enterococcus species in the abscess pus.
Findings:
- Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a subcutaneous tract connecting the dimple to the abscess.
- MR imaging excluded spinal canal abnormalities.
- Surgical excision confirmed the dermal sinus tract ending at the subcutaneous abscess.
Implications:
- Lateral congenital dermal sinus should be considered in the differential diagnosis of buttock dimples.
- Advanced imaging (CT and MR) is essential for evaluating suspected lateral CDS.
- Prompt surgical intervention after infection control can lead to favorable outcomes.
